Help For Start-Up Businesses in The Landscaping Industry!

For the past 13 years, Sones Accountancy Services has been working with businesses in the landscaping industry. Our vision is to help business owners at all levels in the industry to ‘know their numbers’ and gain confidence in using their numbers to make sound business decisions.

As the owner of the practice and an accountant, I am fortunate to have the skills to understand a profit and loss account and cash flow statement to help me run my business. I feel lost and out of control until I have clarity on my numbers. I know what a difference it makes to me and the decisions I make for my business when I have reviewed the numbers to understand what has happened during the month and the profitability at the end.

Matt Eden of Eden Horticultural Ltd and I have created a Facebook group called The Landscaper’s Hub to help and provide advice and tips to those starting, or wanting to grow, a business in the landscaping industry. Each week on The Landscaper’s Hub, we record a live video discussing different topics from artificial grass to cash flow! We are building a community of like-minded people who feel comfortable asking each other questions in our safe, private group. Anyone that runs a business in the landscaping industry is welcome.

Recently, Sones Accountancy Services has become an accredited member of BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries). BALI encourages the highest standards of service amongst its members and their application process was very thorough.  We applied for BALI membership as we believe it will bring us closer to our vision of helping business owners in the industry gain clarity on their numbers.  Also, BALI aligns with our business values of providing a professional service with a personal approach.

I am working towards a certification in business strategy to strengthen my skills as an accountant and business advisor.  The certification will be beneficial when advising business owners on the importance of knowing and understanding their numbers to enable good business decisions to be made and future goals to be reached.  As part of the certification, I was required to write a business plan and conduct market research.  I chose to hold a focus group for the market research and invited industry-specific individuals to a meeting to ask them specific questions and encouraged them to provide their opinions and experience. The answers provided were insightful and have helped me to understand that the biggest challenge for a business owner starting out in the industry is not knowing where to start when it comes to business finances.

Based on the findings from the focus group, together with the work of The Landscaper’s Hub and the visions of our accountancy practice, Sones Accountancy Services has chosen to offer two different packages to help those starting a business in the landscaping industry according to their size. They are:
